AIDS Control Office Established

Wolkite, Dec. 10 (WIC) - A permanent office has been established at the zonal level in Wolkite town mandated with the task of containing the fast spread of AIDS in Guraghie zone. According to Ato Mohammed Nur, head of the social sector of the zonal administrative council, the new office comprising seven members and administered by budget, is established under the name, "HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Task Force."

The new office, which works under the zonal diseases prevention and control team of the zonal health department, is accountable to the zonal council.

Ato Mohammed said the task force is mandated to help the society have a heightened awareness about the disease and to bring about fundamental attitudinal changes in order to protect families and the communities against the disease.

The office will shortly form committees and sub-committees at woreda and lower levels and will work closely with Idir associations, religious organizations, administrative councils and government departments.

According to Dr. Mitiku Wolde Mariam, head of the zonal health department, out of the 1.8 million people of the zone, 18,000 have been confirmed HIV positive.
