January 21, Addis Tribune -Ethiopia to Get Aid to Fight Scourge

Ethiopia has been selected by USAID to receive additional funding to fight the AIDS pandemic in 2000, according to a USAID press release. Other countries are Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria , Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
These countries were selected "due to the severity of the epidemic and the commitment of their governments to stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS".
They will all receive additional funding under President Clinton's LIFE (Leadership and Investment Fighting an Epidemic) initiative. United States government is the world leader in responding to the global pandemic of AIDS . USAID budget for AIDS in 2001 will be approximately US$ 250 million, a 100 percent increase over the figure for 1999 .
