The Aklilu Lemma Foundation Awards Outstanding Students and Researchers

 

ADDIS ABABA September 19, (ENA)- The Foundation of the Aklilu Lemma Fund for Scholarships and Research Grants awarded here yesterday 27 meritorious undergraduate students and four young researchers drawn from various faculties of

the Addis Ababa University with scholarships and research grants.

 

Foundation principal coordinator, Dr. Zemede Asfaw, said on the occasion that the foundation came into existence in 1997 in a bid to promote, support and encourage higher education and scientific researches in the country.

 

He said the students, selected for their academic excellence, had benefited stipend money amounting to 200 birr per month for 2000/2001 academic years as well as educational materials.

 

He said four of the academic staff of the university have also been granted the full amount of the research fund that they requested after the approval of their research proposals.

 

Accordingly, Dr. Gobena Ameni, Dr. Moges Wolde-Meskel, Dr. Ashebir Gayim and Ato Tilaye Wube from the patho-biology veterinary medicine, medicine and science faculties respectively were granted a total of over 34,000 birr of research funds, he said.

 

He said the foundation, named after the Ethiopian researcher Professor Aklilu Lemma had so far granted scholarships and research grants to 70 students and eight researchers amounting to over 246,000 birr.

 

Ato Seyom Alemayehu, foundation vice president, awarded the scholarships and research grants to the students and junior academic staff of the university.
