 More Than 800 Abuses Against Children Reported In Addis Ababa

 

   Addis Ababa, February 24, 2002 (WIC)- The Addis Ababa Police Commission disclosed that

   8087 child abuses were reported in Addis Ababa last year alone.

 

   Head of the Children's Right Protection Department at the Commission, Major Temesgen Tizazu

   said among the those abused, aged below 18 years of age, are 3,150 girls.

 

   The Head said 23 various types of crimes, including abandoning babies were committed

   against the children.

 

   According to Tizazu, 163 babies were found abandoned in the city  during the reported period.

 

   Meanwhile, the commission disclosed that 10,770 children and youths were reported to have

   involved in criminal activities in the city during the same period.

 

   The children have committed crimes varying from beating and robbery to rape and murder, the

   head indicated.
