Demographic Research Crucial to Decentralisation: NPO

ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 29 (ENA) - The information gathered from five states is vital for the decentralisation programme in the country, the National Population Office (NPO) said.

Opening a national workshop on migration, gender and health survey of five states, head of NPO, Dr. Negussie Teffera, said here yesterday, the study would be important to know population mobility due to drought and famine.

He noted the need for migration data in the current economic environment is important to study the labour migration pattern in line with the investment promotion activities in the country.

In order to design policies and programmes, the causes and consequences of migration should be studied, he added.

Academic Vice President of the Addis Ababa University, Dr. Hailu Ayele, on his part said the area of migration research and its interrelationship to social and economic charge, women's status and health are important to speed up the development process in Ethiopia.

The graduate students of the Demographic Training and Research Centre in the Addis Ababa University were trained to participate as planners, supervisors as well as analyst of data in the survey of migration, gender and health of the Tigray, Amhara, Oromia, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples states and the Addis Ababa City Administration, he added.

Dr. Hailu said the research conducted by DTRC of Addis Ababa University and Population Study Training Centre of Brown University, USA helped the graduate students of DTRC to generate data for NSC theses.

Some 13 reports would be presented to the workshop for discussion, the organisers said.
