18 mln. Birr Schools Under Construction

Dire Dawa (ENA) The construction of one high and fifteen primary schools is well under way in Dire Dawa Administrative Council at an outlay of 18 million birr, the administration's education and cultural office said.

Office Head, Tamirat Hailemariam,. told ENA that the construction and expansion of seven primary schools had already been finalized.

Tamirat siad the government, the African Development Bank and the Dire Dawa branch of the Ethiopian Social Rehabilitation and Development Fund financed the under-taking.

The schools are expected to enroll 8,000 students upon going operational next academic year.

Meanwhile, the Dire Dawa branch office of the Ethiopian Social Rehabilitation and Development Fund (ESRDF), said it is undertaking seven development projects with an out lay of over 2.3 million birr in the current Ethiopian budget year.

Office representative, Biressaw Semie, told ENA Thursday that the implementation of the projects, which would serve five kebeles of the town, include, among others, the construction of public latrines, primary schools and installation of rural mills.

Ten per cent of the stated amount of money was secured form the local people, he said.

he said an agreement has been reached with the people in the area to undertake some 18 projects at a cost of tow million birr shortly.

The projects, he said, would focus on capacity building, education, conservation of natural resources and the provision of potable water.

Upon going operational, the projects would benefit 20,800 people, Biressaw said.

According to the representative, the branch office had earlier allocated about 14 million birr to undertake various projects in the current budget year.

Twenty-five of the 38 projects, executed at a cost of 7.6 million birr last Ethiopian budget year, have become operational thereby rendering service to 85,500 local people, he said.
