The Ethiopian Education Mass Media Agency is scheduled to launch a pilot satellite radio programme in November this year.
EMMA General Manager Demesew Bekele told ENA that the pilot programme would be on air for a year to be followed by a formal satellite radio broadcast.
He said 50 satellite radios were imported to receive the programme which would be transmitted from South Africa. The radios would soon be distributed among primary and secondary schools in various states of the country. Some 443 educational radio productions had been sent to South Africa for the pilot programme.
The pilot satellite radio programme was sponsored by the agency and the World Space Company, the general manager said.
The company will donate 10,000 satellite radios when the agency launches a formal satellite radio broadcast.
The agency, which has 12 relay stations, currently broadcasts educational programmes in 17 local languages.
