Growing Rate of Girl Abduction, Rape Reported

Durame, Nov. 28 (WIC) A total of over 50 cases of girl abduction and rape crimes are committed every year in the Alaba Kambata Tembaro zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples State (SNNPS), the state's women affairs office said. Office representative Woizero Ilfinesh Habte Mariam told WIC that in most cases the offenders go unpunished without any kind of legal action taken against them.

Woizero Ilfinesh said that the offenders in most cases happen to be close relatives or acquaintances to members of the local justice administration who are reluctant to hold them answerable for the crimes.

Meanwhile, an individual who deflowered his 8 year old niece in Siraro woreda of East Shoa zone was sentenced to a ten year in jail, woreda officials said.
