Laws Breaching Women's Rights Should be Reformed: paper

Addis Ababa (ENA) A study paper indicated that until some articles in the existing civil and penal codes that despise the women's human and legal rights are revoked their applications and implementations should be in the spirit of the Federal Constitution.

The paper presented to a two-day workshop held to discuss the gender issue vis-a-vis the Ethiopian laws said there are still laws in the country that consider women as inferior in the society.

The judiciary and specially women who have been deprived of their rights as a result of the existing laws should coordinate efforts for the cancellation of these codes, it said.

The workshop which was opened by W/ro Tadelech Haile-Michael, Head of the Women's Affairs Sector in the Prime Minister's Office, is expected to suggest solutions to the problems identified with respect to exercising the rights of women.
