Mekelle, July 09, 2001 (WIC)- The Business and Economics Faculty of Mekelle University
disclosed that it will to offer courses in micro finance.
At a two-day workshop which deliberated on the launching of the new programme, faculty
AssistantDean Zeid Negash, said the University has planned to begin offering courses in micro
finance with the view to creating skilled man power for the various institutions rendering loan
services throughout the country.
Zeid said that beginning from the next academic year, the faculty would give training to
people working in institutions providing small-scale loan services.
He also said that the faculty would launch degree and diploma programmes in micro finance
later a year.
Dr. Mitiku Haile, President of the University, said on his part that the programme also aims at
or providing training as well as technical support to sub-Saharan African countries.
About 37 million birr is needed to launch the programme, Mitiku said, adding that the
University was currently seeking financial assistance from various sources.
Some 130 micro finance experts, drawn from the US, Bangladesh, Cote d'Ivoire and Ethiopia
are attending at the workshop.
