Police Detain Prof. Mesfin, Dr. Berhanu Nega, on Charges of Inciting Student Unrest
Addis Ababa, May 08(WIC)- The Federal Police Commission disclosed today that it has detained Prof. Mesfin W/Mariam and Dr. Berhanu Nega on Charges of inciting the Addis Ababa University students into creating chaos in the capital.
A statement from the Federal Police Investigation Coordination Division, said the two were arrested this morning after evidences of having been engaged in acts of inciting student unrest, have been collected by police.
According to the same statement, the cases of Prof. Mesfin and Dr. Berhanu, who were detained following the issuance of court arrest warrant will be brought to court of law after further investigation by police.
Reports abounded in the past two weeks, alleging that were engaged in acts of inciting students riots in their meetings with University students at the National Lottery Auditorium on April 8,2001.
Prof. Mesfin the founder of the Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRCO) was its chairman until he stepped down to serve the council as an executive committee member.
Dr. Berhanu Nega, former President of the Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) and who was also lecturer at the Addis Ababa University, is currently, the Director of the EEA’s research arm, the Ethiopian Economic Research Institute.
