Exceeds 76,000 Mark


ADDIS ABABA, March 9 (WIC) The number of Aids patients in the country has shot up by over

ten-thousand in just a year exceeding the 76,000 mark at present, the Ministry of Health said. The

Ministry's AIDS and STD control section export in the AIDS and Epidemology Department Ato Mengesha

Yadeta said the figure was arrived at following registration of AIDS patients conducted throughout

the country's hospital. He said that reliable figures have been received from hospitals in Oromia,

Gambela, Benishangul Gumuz, Tigray and the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples State

(SNNPS) while those received from Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa Administration as well as from Harari Afar,

and Amhara States are yet to be verified or sent.


According to the information already made available, the figures for AIDS patients are 27,343 for Addis

Ababa, 20,353 for Oromia, 11,613 for Amhara, 6,041 for SNNPS, 3,029 for Tigray, 2,842 for Dire Dawa and

2,835 for Harari. Over 90 per cent of the patients are married people of between the ages of 15 to 49, it

was learnt.
