Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association Urge the Outlawing of Female Circumcision
By Our Staff Reporter
The Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association (EWLA) has called for the promulgation of a law that prohibits female circumcision.
"A law prohibiting female circumcision would significantly back up activities under way to prevent and eventually put an end to the harmful traditional practices that are evidenced to be the cause of many deaths of women," says Maaza Ashenafi, EWLA’s
executive director. Speaking last week at a symposium attended by representatives of parliament, the police, the prosecutor and concerned governmental and non-governmental organizations, Maaza said that of 28 countries practicing female circumcision in Africa, 10 had imposed laws against the practice.
