 Ministry to Launch Roving Schools for Pastoralist Communities in Afar, Somali

   Asaita, January 2, 2002 (WIC)- The Ministry of Education disclosed that preparations were

   finalized to launch basic education for the pastoralist communities in Afar and Somalia Regional

   State.

 

   Informal Educational Programmes Team Leader with the Ministry, Ato Ayele Anole told a four

   day workshop that opened in Assaita yesterday that the level of illiteracy in the two regional

   States was relatively high  because of the absence of institutions that provide basic

   education.

 

   According to Ayele the basic education in the two regional States will be offered at roving

   institutions and boarding schools to be launched soon.

 

   Only 7.3 per cent of the Afar people and about 8 per cent the Somali people were literate, he

   said adding that the primary education coverage of the two States was only 11.5 per cent.

 

   Experts from the Addis Ababa University the Association of German Adult Education, the Afar

   Regional State and the Ministry of education are attending the workshop.
