Dr. Mesfin Appointed Professor of Soil Science

Ethiopian received int'I award

Harar Dec. 12 (ENA) - The Alemaya University of Agriculture (AUA) Friday appointed professor of soil science one of its distinguished lecturers, Dr. Mesfin Abebe Wolde Mariam, the University Deputy dean has announced.

Dr. Belay Kassa said the university gave the professional post, the first in its history, to Dr. Mesfin for his outstanding contribution in research and preparation of texts in the field of agriculture.

The university board approved Dr. Mesifn's appointment following a meeting it held on December 1, he said.

Born in 1943 in Jimma town, Dr. Mesfin graduated from the then Alemaya Agriculture College in 1968, according to his biography.

He received his MA and PhD from California University.

Dr. Mesfin had served as research publication officer, soil science subsector head and dean of agriculture faculty . He had also served as agriculture vice minister and minister of Natural Resources Development and Environmental protection.

Meanwhile, the First Ethiopian, Dessalegn Rahamato was honored with Prince Claus Award at a ceremony held here on Wednesday at the residence of the Royal Netherlands Embassy, a press release issued by the embassy said.

The Netherlands Ambassador to Ethiopia, Pieter Marres handed over the 20,000 US dollar award to Dessalegn, according to the release.

Present on the occasion were representatives of the Ethiopian academic and socio-economic community, government and other invited guests.

The Prince Calus Fund was instituted in 1996 as a cultural birthday present to Prince Claus by the Dutch Government in appreciation of is lifelong achievements.

The Prince Caluse Fund stimulates and supports activities in the field of culture and development by allocating the fund of the award among others.

Ten laureates, including the Ethiopian, received the award in their respective countries while three others received theirs in Amsterdam.
