Rape Crimes Rising in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, September 4 (Xinhuanet) -- About 544 charges were filed against rape cases in the capital of Addis Ababa in the past year ending this September according to the Ethiopian calendar, the Ethiopian Herald newspaper reported here

Tuesday.

Police detained 425 of the 618 alleged rapists while the number of rape cases in the capital has been on the rise since 1986,  Hailu Abebe, an official of the metropolitan police commission,  was quoted as saying. He called on the media and other pertinent bodies to mobilize the public to fight against the crime before it takes root and  goes out of hand. Earlier, the Ethiopian Women's Democratic Association said about 84 cases of rape on average accrued daily in Addis Ababa since the beginning of this year. These cases are never reported or brought to court due to social and cultural problems, according to the association.  Enditem
