Addis Ababa, July 29, 2001 (WIC)- A public gathering with the objective of raising
awareness on human rights of women/girls has convened here today.
The Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia (FGAE), an NGO with objectives to promote
sexual and reproductive health of women, organized the gathering.
Speaking at the public gathering Executive Director of FGAE, Amare Bedada said millions of
Ethiopian women are suffering from various forms of violence perpetrated against them by
their male counter parts.
He said though Ethiopia had ratified many of the International Conventions pertaining to the
protection of women's right, there were still a vacuum in integrating the conventions to the
country's legal systems.
He also called on the government and the judiciary to give due attentions to the prevailing
socio-economic problems of women.
According to Ato Amare, gender based violence on Ethiopian women include, rape, abduction,
sexual harassment, domestic violence and Female Genital mutilation.
Victims of violence's, NGOs concerned with promoting human rights of women's and people
from various strata attended the gathering.
