Ministry to Launch 26-million-birr Children's Support Programme

Ministry to Launch 26-million-birr Children's Support Programme

Addis Ababa, December 12, 2001 (WIC)- The Ministry of Labour and Social Affair, said it

would soon launch a 26-million-birr children's support programme in 14 urban centers in the

country, through fund secured from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Dr. Bulti Gutema, Children and Youth Affairs Department Head with the Ministry told WIC that

the programme, to involve some 20,000 children of low income families, will provide education,

health and other social services to protect them from being forced into street life.

He said the programme to be launched in 2002 was the result of successful similar programmes

undertaken in the past three years, in Mekele, Bahir-Dar, Nazareth, Shashemene, Awassa and

   Addis Ababa.

Dr. Bulti said, the Ministry was working to help guarantee the respect of children's rights,

while trying to ease their parents' economic problems through cooperation with donor

   organizations.

The Ministry has been censured by a forum last week, organized by the House of Peoples

Representatives, to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the International Human Rights

day, for reportedly having failed to properly discharge the duties vested in it by proclamation.
