STC awards three persons for their technological innovation
Addis Ababa, June 30, 2002 (WIC) - The Ethiopian Science and Technology Commission (ESTC) has given incentives to three Ethiopians in recognition of their outstanding innovation in the field of science and technology.
ESTC Commissioner, Mulugeta Amha said at the National S&T Award ceremony held at Sheraton Addis for the first time today that the winners were selected out of 29 applicants for their research and innovative works in agriculture and environment protection, industry, water, mine and energy as well as health sectors.
Accordingly in the agriculture sector, Melesse Temesgen has won for his innovation of simple, cheaper as well as effective and time saving Erf and mofer attached movld-Board plow used by small holder farmers to pull by oxen and horses.
In the industry sector, Girma Alemu has been awarded for fabricating abattoirs by-product processing industry which is pollution control, energy saving and recovery while Endale Getachew has also won award in Mine, Water and Energy sector completion for his innovation of water well drilling rig which has the capacity to drill up to 120m depth.
Handing over the award, president Girma Woldegiorgis, attributed the backwardness of the country mainly to low level of the development of science and technology as well as the stigma attached to innovative people.
He said the government has been attaching high importance for research and study in the fields of science, technology agriculture and other sectors.
The incentives included 20,000 birr, gold medal and certificate of accreditation.
Representatives drawn from various government offices, private sectors as well as families of the awards have attended the national award ceremony.
