Teen prostitutes fuel AIDS in Addis - doctor
08:23 a.m. Oct 28, 1999 Eastern

ADDIS ABABA, Oct 28 (Reuters) - A senior Ethiopian doctor said on Thursday 30 people were dying each day of AIDS in the capital and called for a crackdown on teenage prostitution which he said fuelled the rampant spread of the disease.

Dr Iyasu Haile Selassie, a gynecologist and head of a health charity, told an AIDS workshop in Addis Ababa that 30,000 young prostitutes worked on the streets of the capital inhabited by around three million people.

Brothels and cheap drinking houses were springing up unchecked all over the city, he said.

``Brothel owners, particularly elderly women, are responsible for recruiting innocent teenage girls from the countryside with promises of jewelry and wealth,'' he said.

Boarding houses in the shanty towns rented out beds on an hourly basis, helping the spread of the killer disease.

Iyasu called for radical measures to wipe out teenage prostitution and a government education programme aimed at stemming the spread of AIDS.

The U.N.'s AIDS research agency UNAIDS said in a recent report on Ethiopia that the young age of first sexual activity was partly responsible for the spread of HIV infection.

It estimated that 2.5 million of Ethiopia's 60 million people were infected with the HIV virus.
