UNICEF Oversees Distribution of Biscuits to
ADDIS ABABA, March 24 (WIC) – UNICEF today began facilitating distribution of 30 MTs of high protein biscuits donated by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for intensive feeding of malnourished children in Gode zone of Somali State. According to a release issued by UNICEF today, recurrent drought over the last three years in
Somali State has severely affected the nutritional status of children resulting in a rapid decline of their health status.
UNICEF aims to distribute the high protein biscuits with the state's disaster prevention and preparedness bureau and the health bureau through implementing partners including Save the Children-USA and Ogaden Welfare Society, the release said. The release quoted UNICEF Representative, Mr. Ibrahim Jabr as saying, "USAID's contribution comes as a timely
intervention as relief measures by Government and UN agencies gather momentum in Gode zone, one of the hardest hit areas by recurrent drought."
UNICEF aims at mobilizing 4.7 million USD to assist drought affected Ethiopians through water, health, nutrition, basic education and shelter assistance interventions, the release said.
