Women in Western Tigrai Refrain from taking Eggs, Milk

Endesilassie, August 4,2001 (WIC) - Women in Walkait woreda of Western Tigrai Zone

disclosed that the woreda women do not take eggs and milk because of the long-held

misconception that consuming these products would make them be disobedient to their

   husbands.

The women, who requested anonymity, also said that women in the woreda are not allowed to

sit in the same table to with their husbands during meals.

Ashebir Tegegn, Head of Women's Technical Training Center, said that although his center has

attempted on many occasions to convince the women to relinquish the misconception, they

   were unwilling to do so.

The Department is raising awareness on the issue to help change the misconception of the

   community.
