Workshop on Environmental Impact Assessment Conducted

ADDIS ABABA, September 30 (ENA) - A three-day workshop on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), organised by the Heinrich Boll Foundation, was conducted at Wabi-Shebele Hotel in Langano from September 23-25.

The programme co-ordinator of the Foundation, Ato Million Belay, said the workshop was aimed at enhancing the awareness of pertinent personnel in both governmental and non-governmental organisations on the issue and the importance of EIA in the context of different development endeavours.   He said that the workshop also served as a forum in which the participants could have a common understanding and establish a network to work together as EIA "needs integrated effort to attain sustainable development."

Some 22 participants, including two from Djibouti and one from Somaliland, were offered training on the background, the process, practical issues, procedures and applications of EIA.  They visited the Abijata Soda Ash Enterprise near Abijata Laka as part of the field trip.

The co-ordinator of the workshop, Mr. Ian Campbell, Chief Technical Advisor of the Conservation Strategy of Ethiopia within the Ministry of Economic Development and co-operation (MEDaC), said that Ethiopia has a progressive Environmental Protection Policy though it is not yet well implemented.  He said EIA was not so far being properly conducted in this country.

The Environmental Policy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia was formulated in April 1997 by the Environmental Protection Authority in collaboration with the MEDaC.
